Water damage often occurs without warning; a pipe breaks or your sump pump fails, leaving you and your family in a precarious situation. It is important to take care of water or flood damage as soon as possible because as long as the water is there the damage continues. The concern here is what is known as secondary damage or moisture damage. Secondary water damage occurs when the air has absorbed as much moisture as it can leading the surplus moisture to attack the surroundings. Sheetrock will sag, hardwood floors will buckle, vinyl flooring will separate from its base and bacteria will soon begin to grow rapidly.
To prevent this, O'Kelly's Custom Carpet & Painting Inc has a 24 hour emergency water damage restoration service.
First you want to identify the source of the flood or leak, which will determine whether your carpet is salvageable. "Sanitary" water comes from pipes or rain, while "unsanitary" water comes from overflowed toilets and other sources that may be slightly contaminated. A carpet that has come into contact with "black" water, such as raw sewage or groundwater, should be discarded as soon as possible.
Once the problem is identified and the pipe or leak has been stopped then we get to work. We will remove the water by using a wet/dry vacuum to clean up as much of the water as possible. ALL WATER DAMAGED PADDING MUST BE REMOVED. Once the all the water is cleaned carpet must carefully be pulled off of the tack strips and folded back in one piece. Damaged padding will bagged up, removed and subfloor must be dried as much as possible, carpet must be laid back down flat so the drying process can begin. First, use a dehumidifier to remove excessive moisture and reduce humidity levels with dehumidifiers. This will not only make the air feel cooler, but it will also limit the growth of mold and mildew. Second, speed drying with fans underneath the carpet will help the process move along and prevent the growth of any mold. These steps you will want to do as soon as possible to get fresh air circulating.
After drying process is completed the reinstallation process begins. If effected room is connected to another carpeted area the new padding purchased must match existing padding. If room is not connected then you may choose the padding you like. Carpeting will then be folded back again so padding can be installed. After installing the padding carpeting will be laid back down flat so the restretching process can begin.
Once reinstallation process is complete all carpets should be cleaned to properly sanitize and deodorize.
